Falmouth cruise port guide: what to do in your hours ashore

Historic Falmouth Cruise Port was built on reclaimed land to take the largest cruise ships afloat, with two berths on either side of one pier and a gated shopping village behind it. Step out of the gate and you are in Falmouth, a small 18th-century Georgian sugar-port town that is far quieter than the port complex. There is no real swimming beach in town: most passengers go rafting on the Martha Brae, visit a great house, or ride about 45 minutes west to the beaches of Montego Bay.

Money and language

Money: Jamaican dollar (JMD). Shops in the port, tour operators and taxis quote in US dollars; outside the gates small vendors may prefer Jamaican dollars, and the exchange rate moves, so check it before you pay large sums in local currency.

Language: English is official; Jamaican Patois is what you will hear on the street.

Opening hours

The shops and bars in the port village open whenever a ship is alongside. In town, stores keep roughly 9:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Falmouth town is very quiet on Sundays and most local shops are closed; the port shops and excursions still run when a ship calls.

Weather

Daytime highs of 30–32°C all year. Warm year-round with the trade winds taking the edge off; afternoon downpours are most common in May and from September to November, inside the June-to-November hurricane season.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Falmouth cruise port from Montego Bay?

About 30 km (18 miles) west along the coast highway, usually 40–50 minutes by car depending on traffic in Montego Bay.

Is there a beach near Falmouth cruise port?

Not one worth the ride for most people. There is no swimming beach at the pier or in town; the nearest popular beaches are in Montego Bay, or you can buy a day pass at one of the resorts along the coast.

Can you walk into Falmouth town from the ship?

Yes. Leave the gated port village and the Georgian centre around Water Square is a few minutes away on foot. It is a working town, not a shopping street, so expect locals and a few hustlers rather than boutiques.

Are US dollars accepted in Falmouth, Jamaica?

Yes, inside the port and for taxis and tours. In town small amounts in Jamaican dollars go further, and card machines are less common outside the port.

Falmouth cruise traffic: 564,000 cruise passengers in 2024 (Port Authority of Jamaica); Jamaica's three cruise ports together handled about 1.5 million.
