Puerto Plata cruise port guide: what to do in your hours ashore
Puerto Plata has two separate cruise ports, so check which one your ship uses. Taino Bay sits in the old harbour right next to the city: you can walk into the Victorian centre, the San Felipe fortress and the Malecón in minutes. Amber Cove, built by Carnival, is about 10 km west along the coast, a self-contained resort-style pier with pools and shops, from where everything else means a taxi or a tour. Times on this page are from Taino Bay; from Amber Cove add roughly 15–20 minutes to anything in or east of town.

Getting around from the terminal
- Walk (Taino Bay): From Taino Bay the city centre, Parque Central and the fortress are a five to ten minute walk. Free carts take you from the ship to the port exit. Men in official vests offer to guide you for a fee; a polite no is fine.
- Taxi: Licensed tourist taxis wait at both ports with prices per destination for the whole car. Confirm the price, the currency and whether it is one way or return before you set off. being verified
- From Amber Cove: Nothing is walkable outside the port. A taxi to Puerto Plata town takes about 15–20 minutes; many people book a ship or private tour that combines town, a beach and 27 Charcos.
- Cable car: The Teleférico up Mount Isabel de Torres has been closed since 2024 for a full replacement. Do not plan on it unless you have confirmed it has reopened. being verified
Money and language
Money: Dominican peso (DOP). US dollars are widely taken for taxis, tours and souvenirs, but change often comes back in pesos; pesos get you better prices in local shops and cafés.
Language: Spanish. Guides, taxi drivers and port staff usually speak some English.
Opening hours
Shops in the centre generally open Monday to Saturday from about 9:00 to 18:00, some closing for a midday break. The port shops open whenever a ship is in.
On Sundays many town shops close or open only in the morning; the shops inside Taino Bay and Amber Cove operate on ship days.
Weather
Daytime highs of 28–32°C all year. Hot and humid; the north coast gets showers in any month, heaviest from November to January when the trade winds bring rain. Hurricane season runs June to November.

Frequently asked questions
Which Puerto Plata cruise port is my ship using?
Your cruise documents name either Taino Bay or Amber Cove. Taino Bay is in Puerto Plata itself and walkable to the centre. Amber Cove is about 10 km west and you need a taxi or tour for anything outside the port.
Can I use US dollars in Puerto Plata?
Yes, for taxis, tours and most souvenir shops. Carry small bills, because change is often given in Dominican pesos at a rate set by the seller.
Is the Puerto Plata cable car open?
It closed in 2024 and is being replaced with a new system. Until it reopens, the summit of Isabel de Torres is only reachable by road, and few cruise tours include it.
How far is the nearest beach from the cruise port?
From Taino Bay, Playa Dorada is about fifteen minutes by taxi and Cofresí a little further west. From Amber Cove, Cofresí and Ocean World are only a few minutes away, and Sosúa is about 30 minutes from Taino Bay and closer to 45 from Amber Cove.
Puerto Plata cruise traffic: 2,202,634 cruise passengers in 2025 at Taino Bay and Amber Cove together (Infotur Dominicano).
